Who’s Behind divinginsurance.com
divinginsurance.com is put together by me, Chris Mitchell – I’m a British scuba diving journalist based in Bangkok, Thailand. I’m a Field Editor for Scuba Diver AustralAsia magazine and have contributed to numerous other diving magazines such as Asian Diver, Sport Diver (USA), EZ Dive and Underwater Photography magazine. With my friend Jez Tryner I co-authored the book Thailand’s Underwater World, due to be published in late 2011. You can read more of my stories at my scuba diving site DiveHappy.com. I also run the Thailand traveling site TravelHappy
What Does divinginsurance.com Do?
I put together divinginsurance.com as a guide to why getting dive insurance is important and who the best providers are as it’s a question I often get asked – ranging from “should I even bother with diving insurance?” to “what kind of policy is right for me?”. It’s obviously not the sexiest of topics but it is vitally important, especially for the kind of diving I do most which involves being in very remote areas of Asia (such as Indonesia and the Philippines) and getting First World level medical attention would involve some extremely expensive evacuations.
What Diving Insurance Do You Use?
I have used or am currently using World Nomads insurance, Divemaster underwater camera and scuba gear insurance and DAN insurance (back when I was a practicing scuba instructor). I have never had a diving accident in 1500 dives and I hope never to have one, but I have had a couple of catastrophic camera and strobe floods for which – guess what? – I wasn’t insured. Lesson learnt and I’m now very diligent at checking my policies and keeping them up to date.
Do You Make Commission On Sales?
I make a small referral fee each time a policy is purchased at World Nomads, DiveMaster or DiveAssure. I don’t receive any referral fee from DAN as they do not have an affiliate program at the moment. Obviously I’d be thrilled if you find this site useful enough to book your diving insurance through it, but most of all, I hope you make sure you get decent insurance coverage for your next dive trip so you can dive with peace of mind.
